SOME THREE YEARS ago I edited a book about the state of liberalism in Australia. The contributors were journalists, editors, poets, a dramatist, a novelist who were all disconcerted by the decline -- a South African might say the slide-away -- of the liberalism of the 1960s into a dogmatic and conformist, even bullying, ideology. Their chapters were critical re-examinations of multiculturalism, feminism, gay liberation, state patronage of the arts, the United Nations and so on. We called the book Double Take and, without planning it that way, we more or less agreed that our target was probably Political Correctness.
