Low-modulus carbon-carbon composites have been fabricated into plates that conduct heat almost as well as aluminum at two-thirds the weight, reports BFGoodrich Supertemp, Calif. The work was supported by the Lockheed Martin Astronautics Independent R&D Project D-90D. Carbon-carbon composites are carbon-fiber reinforced carbon matrix composites. Based on extensive material studies, Lockheed Martin identified low-modulus C-C as an optimal material to quickly dissipate heat.
