A clear gel that can be spread on the scalp may be able to prevent unwanted hair loss among people undergoing chemotherapy.
"We find these are very exciting results," said Stephen Davis, a research investigator for Glaxo Wellcome, Inc., Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Davis said that half of laboratory rats suffered no hair loss when the gel was spread on their bodies and then were administered etoposide, an anti-cancer drug that is used to treat a number of cancers and often results in hair loss.
