LONDON, April 3 (UPI)
Britain on Monday announced tough new measures to deter potential asylum seekers from heading for the country and cut back on cash support for those waiting for decisions on their fate. Officials said the new Asylum and Immigration Act will help genuine asylum seekers. Critics attacked it as racially prejudiced.
The measures followed an agreement with France for stringent immigration checks on the London-Paris train, dubbed the "asylum train" because of loopholes used by Balkan and former Soviet Union refugees and others to enter Britain.
