Q Why is there panic over a disease in cattle?
A Because it could be spreading to humans, with fatal results.
Q WHAT is the disease, and what does it do?
A BSE, or mad cow disease. It kills by altering a protein in the body. The medical term - bovine spongiform encephal- opathy - takes its name from the fact the disease leaves sponge-like holes in the brain, leading to confusion, dementia and death.
