Maurice
WITH Maurice, the producer Ismail Merchant and the director James Ivory, this time with Kit Hesketh-Harvey replacing Ruth Prawer Jhabvala at the writing end, have made their best film to date. E. M. Forster's 1914 novel--a homosexual wish-fulfillment fantasy written before the author had lost his virginity--is markedly inferior to his other fiction, hence more likely to survive filmization; besides, the subject is clearly congenial to our film-makers.
