I'm ashamed I don't speak the language myself. I'm told it's a grand language by them that knows.
The Auld Tongue
When passing for Irish, it is not necessary to speak Irish (Yeats couldn't), but it is essential to be passionately in favor of its preservation (Yeats was).
The Irish language (called Gaelige) is a variety of Gaelige, the tongue of the ancient Celts. Gaelige was first banned in 1366, by the Statute of Kilkenny (a document written in French), but it survived 750 years of systematic suppression by the English.
