Les Ferdinand wants to repay a debt to Alan Shearer - by helping him fire England towards the World Cup finals.

Ferdinand was meant to be Newcastle's odd-man-out when Shearer arrived on Tyneside to the sound of trumpets blaring and cash registers ringing.

There wasn't room for both of them and there could only be one winner in the tussle for the coveted No 9 shirt. Or so the argument went.

Barely two months on, and the pair are both guaranteed a mention from Glenn Hoddle today when he announces his England squad for next month's World Cup ...
