A new era, comrade, when missiles go
For Eastern Europe's aging, ailing Communist politicians, either a change in Kremlin leadership or a shift in East-West relations is the stuff of bad dreams. When both come in quick succession --a relatively fresh-in-office Mikhail Gorbachev preparing to sign an INF agreement that could usher in a new era of detente--bad dreams threaten to become sleepless nights. From East Berlin to Sofia, hard-line party chiefs are watching with growing apprehension as Gorbachev heads into a Washington summit that may bring major changes in the way they do business at home and with Moscow.
