Apr. 8--Hong Kong's top official worked yesterday to convince U.S. leaders that normalizing trade relations with China would be a boost to the stability and prosperity of the region.
Tung Chee-hwa, chief executive of Hong Kong, told congressional leaders that voting for permanent normal trade relations (NTR), now planned for late May, is crucial to the viability of the regional economy.
"Hong Kong is now recovering from the impact of the financial turmoil," Mr. Tung said after addressing the Hong Kong-U.S. Business Council. "If the U.S. Congress goes the wrong way during the week of May 22, it will be devastating for Hong Kong."
