THE greatest horse in Grand National history won a five-furlong seller at two, the job for which he was bred. But Red Rum was an anomaly. Stout jumping-oriented pedigrees nearly always accompany those who make the frame at Aintree, and this year was no exception.

Papillon, by the Lafontaine out of a winning chaser, defeated Mely Moss, by the top French jumps stallion Tip Moss. Following them home were horses representing some of the classic jumps sires of recent years.
