DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. rejected the money-saving shortcut of using an existing car or truck platform for its new small sport-utility, the Ford Escape.
The company's car platforms could not deliver the light-truck durability that the company wanted. Existing truck platforms couldn't provide the nimble handling needed to attract car buyers.
So Ford developed a new truck platform for the Escape. But it will be Ford's first truck platform with unibody construction, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
``When we looked at other platforms available to us there were too many customer compromises,'' said Keith Takasawa, Escape chief program engineer.
