They must have been heady times. The war was over and the young John Dankworth, already something of a rising star in Britain, had cracked the plum job of playing in the house band aboard the Queen Mary, refitted after five years as a troop carrier and n ow carrying the wealthy and stylish across the Atlantic to dock at the bottom of 52nd Street.
