Rock is dead the prophets of doom would have us believe. The cancelled Phoenix festival, falling CD sales and a dearth of 'event albums' have all contributed to the mood of gloom that seems to have descended on the post-Britpop music industry.
Another view, however, is that things have merely settled back to normal after the brief excitement engendered by the rise of Oasis and, before that, the late 80s explosion of dance music.
Certainly a glance at the nominees for this year's Mercury prize, the winner of which will be announced on Wednesday, would suggest ...
