The debate over religious restrictions in deals between Roman Catholic and secular hospitals has taken a new twist in Florida.
The city of St. Petersburg late last month sued 300-bed Bayfront Medical Center in federal court, alleging that the hospital's participation in an alliance of eight Tampa Bay-area hospitals that includes Catholic hospitals violates the constitutional separation of church and state.
The city owns the hospital property, which it leases to Bayfront Medical, the private not-for-profit corporation that operates the hospital.
