This seems to me an important book in that it combines knowledge of what might appear a recondite subject with an exploration into universal aspects of the human condition. At a time when Golden Age studies face something akin to the struggle engaged in by Latin and Greek such a work is salutary in addressing what is sometimes referred to as 'the pseudo-question of "relevance"'.
