IN the late seventh century, Birmingham began to thrust itself forward to the national stage as a major manufacturing centre.
New trades such as gun making had become important and the population was expanding rapidly. Yet Brummies were packed into a small area of the old manor.
Apart from a few offshoots of the Bull Ring, Birmingham remained a one street town, along which were crowded the workshops of the makers of things.
