Turkey is divided into 18 Petroleum Districts and has two main hydrocarbon producing fairways: oil basins in the south-east, where many fields have been on stream since the 1950s; and a gas-prone area in the Thrace-Gallipoli Basin, on the Marmara Sea, where an offshore gas field has been on stream since May 1997 and is the biggest accumulation of non-associated gas in Turkey.
In offshore areas in the Black Sea, TPAO has Arco as a partner in the south-western section, where gas has been discovered, and BP Amoco as a partner in the eastern section (see Gas Market Trends).
