At one time, when Clare's barren rock and piercing sea spray were the only goods on offer to a dispossessed and impoverished population, this region of the country was the last stop before eventual oblivion. Landscape
A maritime county located in the province of Munster, Clare is bound on the north by Galway Bay, on the east and south by the River Shannon, and on the west by the broad Atlantic. The present county was formed from a native principality known as Thomond (Irish name Tuath-Mumhan) that dominated the farthest reaches of north Munster.
