It's hard to believe that more than ten years have elapsed since I first wrote--on these pages--about astronomical imaging. Since then, astronomy has made great strides in technologies and techniques for collecting, cataloging, archiving, processing, and analyzing its rather unique types of image data.
As I've probed deeper, I've found an enduring kinship among astronomers: a willingness to share, evidenced by the wealth of highly-specialized software that the community has developed and placed in the public domain.
In these same years, of course, commercial image processing also has progressed dramatically--both in its technical sophistication as well ...
