An Academy of the Learned Societies for the Social Sciences has been established in Britain to enhance the development, usefulness, and influence of the social sciences. It is modeled on the Royal Society founded in 1660 to promote the natural sciences. "It has taken a further 339 years for the social sciences.. .to unite and declare their aim of understanding today and shaping tomorrow," a press release stated.
