Most clinicians specializing in the treatment of sex offenders would agree that an accurate assessment of an offender's pattern of sexual arousal (e.g., to deviant vs. nondeviant sexual stimuli) can be important to successful treatment. Despite its importance, such assessment is often difficult to obtain owing to the frequent efforts of many offenders to deny or minimize their deviant response patterns (Marshall, 1994).
