WHEN WE ARRIVED AT Scholastic Coach in 1936, ready to embark on a glorious round of stops with major league baseball, the NFL, and NCAA football and basketball, our new mentors had a surprise for us. They shipped us out to Forest Hills to observe -- not necessarily cover -- the national tennis championships.
Since they were big tennis enthusiasts and since tennis was definitely on their editorial and advertising calendar, they wanted the new kid in town to know more than something about it. (Our resume had listed the 12 sports we had played or at least studied as a P.E. major, but tennis was not among them.)
