Alchemy has made an astonishing U-turn by pledging to save more jobs if it successfully buys Rover's Longbridge plant.
It is believed pressure from the Government has forced Mr Jon Moulton, managing partner of Alchemy, to drastically reduce the number of planned redundancies.
In a last-ditch bid to save jobs at Longbridge, Trade and Industry Secretary Mr Stephens Byers spoke to BMW, Mr Moulton and Mr John Towers, the man leading the rival Phoenix consortium.
