For a change, it was the unsung heroes of the city of Des Plaines who took center stage. It was the volunteers, the lifeblood of the community, who received the accolades at the Socrates Rand Spirit of Des Plaines Award Dinner.
The event took place last weekend at the Casa Royale in Des Plaines. It drew 280 people, including city officials, civic groups, neighbors and business people. They all joined in affirming the people who normally work quietly behind the scenes.
"These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things," Nancy Jenkins, a member of the city's Special Events Commission, who chaired the evening, said. "And no one ever hears about them. ...
