TASTE BUDS VARY WIDELY IN NUMBERS, REGARDLESS OF AGE
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- A Bowman Gray School of Medicine researcher has made a surprise discovery: the number of taste buds on the human tongue varies dramatically from person to person.
Dr. Inglis J. Miller Jr., associate professor of anatomy, found a 100-fold range in taste buds when examining tongues from human cadavers.
"This range may account for the large differences in taste sensitivity among human subjects," he said. But he found no relationship between the number of taste buds and either age or sex.
