As I've written before, the problem with biopics is the elusive quality of greatness. If an actor can capture the elements that made a certain performer great, well then why wouldn't that actor strive to make it on his or her own instead of merely aping someone else?

That's why, aside from noteworthy exceptions like "Man on the Moon," biopics are inevitably turned over to second-rate stars who project only the shadow of greatness, not the real thing.
