In his 21 years of service there, a Palatine Police Deputy chief helped his department deal with a population surge, traffic control, growth in retail and in emergency calls.
Now, Mark Fleischauer expects to do the same as the new top cop in Vernon Hills.
Fleischauer was named Vernon Hills Police Chief Tuesday night, moving him from a town that's 73,000 in population to one that's about 18,000 - but growing.
While Vernon Hills isn't likely to expand to Palatine's size, Fleischauer said he expects to face many of the same challenges in the village where retail and the population are growing.
