Hampshire police are investigating who put an explosive device in a car Wednesday night. The explosion gutted the vehicle.
Holes were cut into the roof of a 1999 Ford Mustang convertible and the explosive device was dropped inside, said Hampshire police officer Ron Malloy Thursday. Malloy is conducting the department's investigation.
"It tore up the driver side of the vehicle," said Malloy, noting the seat, floorboard, the convertible top and part of the dashboard were destroyed.
Kane County police Sgt. Vern Bjornson of the sheriff's department's bomb squad said the explosive appeared to be a powerful M-series fireworks.
