He grew up in New Hampshire, where the rough climate limited the high school baseball season to "12 or 14 games."
When he did play the game as an amateur, it was either as a shortstop or a pitcher.
And when his athletic career continued at the collegiate level, Carlton Fisk attended the University of New Hampshire on a basketball scholarship.
Given that rather unusual background, Fisk said he couldn't help being a little surprised after being voted into baseball's Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
