After a record-breaking number of adoptions last year, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services now is focused on boosting its foster parent ranks.
The good news is some children are adopted by their foster parents, reducing the number in state care. The bad news is some parents who adopt decide to stop their fostering role, shrinking the pool of homes for other children who need temporary care.
Since 1998, DCFS has at least 2,000 fewer homes in which to place abused and neglected children. In 1998, 27,147 families opened their doors. Last year, that number dropped to 25,147.
