Deer used to forage every night in McDowell Grove Forest Preserve along Deborah O'Malley's back yard in Naperville.
Since repair work began last year on a dam in the preserve, she says, the only sign of deer is the scat they leave behind.
When preserve officials announced plans to cull deer from McDowell Grove, neighbors feared it would wipe out any remaining deer.
In response to resident concerns, preserve officials said Tuesday they plan to leave more white-tailed deer alive in the preserve.
Instead of leaving 10 deer to live in the preserve, Commissioner James Healy said the district will spare at least 24 deer.
