When Wendy and Paul first set eyes on their adoptive daughter Clara in her native South America, the little girl was clutching a doll with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Back home in the West Midlands, however, the social worker sent to monitor how Clara was settling down in her new home informed the two-year-old's parents: 'You're going to have to buy her a black doll'.
'I said: 'why? she's not black. Why should she associate herself with a black doll'?'
But such, it seems, is the political correctness inherent in the adoption system.
