Just as the European Commission is finalizing its proposal for a Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) -- the latest draft of which includes provision to phase out brominated flame retardants -- comes news from Sweden of a study that concludes that television (TV) sets flame retarded with precisely the same additive produce significantly lower emissions during their lifetime.
The WEEE Directive seeks to phase out diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), including DecaBDE, which is the retardant that enables US manufacturers to pass much higher fire testing than in Europe. One of the concerns of the European Commission is that these additives result in ...
