Dow has announced successful trials of the next-generation plastic for optical media, polycyclohexylene (PCHE) resin, showing that it can be replicated at 15 gigabytes per layer. These demonstrate that PCHE discs can perform at the faster acceleration and deceleration rates that are required of the next generation of players, in order to read at higher levels of information density.
In the meantime, Dow Plastics is building a new line that is dedicated to production of its latest PC grade for DVD, at its plant in Stade, Germany. It will produce the optical media grade, with a capacity for 20 000 tones per year, and is due for start-up in September 2000.
