Research is vital for revealing the many causes of weight gain and weight loss. But two researchers have decided that perhaps just as much can be learned from simply following successful "losers" and finding out their real-life, long-term solutions to weight problems. The endeavor, dubbed the National Weight Control Registry, was started in 1993 as a collaborative venture between weight-management experts James O. Hill, Ph.D., of the University of Colorado, and Rena R. Wing, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh. The registry has collected information from about 3,000 people in the U.S. who have been successful at maintaining long-term weight loss.
