IT IS one of the most poignant stories in the history of Brum, that of how the heart of Louisa Anne Ryland was broken.
The only child of Samuel Ryland and Anne Pemberton, she had a privileged upbringing, belonging as she did to two of the oldest and wealthiest families in the town.
Her mother's people, the Pembertons, were mentioned as goldsmiths as far back as 1553 when a survey of Birmingham was carried out. In the succeeding years they became ironmongers and gained riches, and in the early 1700s it was John Pemberton who initiated the development of Old ...
