Also known as black snake root, rattleroot and rattleweed, extracts of black cohosh (Cimicijuga racemosa) have been used as a folk remedy for hundreds of years. The herb was introduced into medicine by Native Americans, who still sing its praises.
What It Might Do: Women in Europe have used the standardized black cohosh preparation Remij~min for over 40 years. Extensive European studies have found it efffective for alleviating menpausal hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and sleep disturbances.
How It Works: The active compounds, triterpene glycosides, are extracted from the root of the plant. Its actions have been described as "estrogen-like."
