There was a genuine sense of disbelief when one of the city's most forthright and colourful figures was beaten by Conservative candidate Peter Osborn last night. Politician of all parties joined in paying tribute to a man known to many simply as Sir Dick.
Born on May 20 1917 at Plaxtol, Kent, Sir Richard moved to Birmingham from Leeds in 1969 and has both infuriated and charmed the city ever since with his often-outspoken views.
