As recently as five years ago, message transmittal was accomplished primarily through the mail, technologically antique telex machines or--for the fortunate few--expensive private electronic message networks. In the corporate environment, these activities operated independently of data processing, word processing or any associated networks. Local-area networks of microcomputers were in the talking stage; integrated messaging/EDP networks were rare. Since then, several technological advances--most notably the large-scale application of personal computers--have drastically altered the corporate large-scale messaging environment.
