LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kent Desormeaux learned not to panic while riding at outlaw Louisiana bush tracks where unseasoned horses ended careers before the jockeys had entered high school. It wasn't easy for a teen-ager anxious to move on to learn patience, but Desormeaux became an old soul in the saddle.
Those lessons helped earn him a second blanket of roses yesterday. When Kentucky Derby favorite Fusaichi Pegasus entered the first turn 15th, Desormeaux knew he couldn't make up 13 1/2 lengths with one move. It would take a steady, deliberate effort against a talented field that might not slow down.
