Editor's note: In late February 1998, retired insurance executive John W. "Jack" Gardiner of Naples, Florida, became the first patient to undergo experimental coronary gene therapy at the Boston-based St. Elizabeth's Medical Center (see last issue). Two years later, Jack Gardiner is not only alive but enjoying life to its fullest and actively pursuing a second career.
