BECAUSE THE WORK of modern dance pioneer Jean Erdman made such a significant imprint on the last century, it was especially appropriate that the millennial retrospective Dance 2000, staged by the University of Hawaii at Manoa in February, was dedicated to her.
Now 83, Erdman divides her time between Honolulu, where she was born and raised, and New York, where her collaborators have included Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Donald McKayle, and Louis Horst, as well as poet e.e. cummings, composer John Cage, and Erdman's late husband, myth scholar Joseph Campbell.
