Cardiac problems afflict 58 million Americans and kill more than 950,000 each year. While the death rate from heart attacks has dropped dramatically, risk factors are rising: More Americans are overweight and less physically active than ever before.
The quest to conquer heart disease, America's leading cause of death, has gobbled up billions of dollars and engaged countless researchers for more than half a century. Still, there is no cure. Although the death rate from the disease has dropped a stunning 50 percent since 1950, that decline is slowing, and some cardiovascular conditions are increasing dramatically.
