US demand for industrial water management chemicals is projected to increase 4.7 percent annually to $2.3 billion, or 6.4 billion pounds, in 2004. Growth will reflect a generally healthy manufacturing economy coupled with rising environmental standards. Lower pollution tolerance and stricter enforcement of existing regulations have propagated a trend toward more industrial water recycling, and thus a greater need for chemical treatment. Despite this trend, the market may be threatened in the long term by the rise of non-chemical treatment methods such as membrane separation, ozonation and ultraviolet irradiation.
