DANVILLE, Va. -- Dan River Inc. reported significantly improved earnings in its apparel fabrics division in the first quarter.
Although apparel fabrics sales declined 8.1 percent to $37 million in the first quarter ended April 1, operating income was $3,083,000. This compared to an operating loss of $127,000 in the previous first quarter.
Total net income in the period was $4.9 million, or 22 cents a share, compared to $1.6 million, or 7 cents, in the quarter a year ago. Sales fell 2.7 percent to $164.9 million from $169.5 million.
