Sir Ronnie Flanagan yesterday announced
the closure of six Army bases.
It marked the start of a relaxation in security in the wake of last week's dramatic IRA statement.
Sir Ronnie said Fort George on Derry's Strand Road will be closed and the military installation at Cloghogue in Crossmaglen, South Armagh, dismantled.
The army base in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, and observation posts at Broadway and New Lodge in West and North Belfast will also go.
