MOTIVATION TO FIGHT CHANGES WITH THE SEASON.
For most of the 60 years of my hunting life, conventional wisdom has held that, during the rut, whitetailed bucks roam far and wide--far outside their home ranges--in search of receptive does. That's what my own mentors taught me as a boy, and I took it for gospel. These men were my prophets and philosopher-kings of deer hunting; it never occurred to me that they could be wrong about anything pertaining to whitetails.
