Article: Judges should not be involved in raising funds for legal aid.

A judge may not write a letter asking lawyers in her community to provide pro bono through a legal aid organization or to donate $350 in lieu of service, because the request constitutes a prohibited fundraising activity, according to the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee.

The panel also said while it is not a violation of the code for a judge's staff to accept gifts from lawyers and others who appear before the court, judges should discourage the practice.

In other action, the ethics panel also held a judge cannot publish an article that makes conclusions as to the constitutionality of legislation; a judge is not bound to use a detailed fax transmittal ...
