WASHINGTON STATE UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN DECEMBER

OLYMPIA, Wash., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The unemployment rate in Washington state continued its winter climb from 7.4 percent in November to 7.9 percent in December according to Employment Security Commissioner Isiah Turner.

Unemployment increased from 167,000 to 177,900 during the month. Total employment fell 9,300, but was still up 63,300 over December of 1986 when the unemployment rate was 8.3 percent. The Employment Security Department helped 8,100 workers find jobs during December.
